One Year Later and a Hiatus

1year

Happy B-Day, Blog!

I launched this blog on my big chop anniversary. That means next week I’ll be five years natural and The Pursuit of Natural will be one year old. I thought, like with most blogs, I’d be writing into the void from my little unseen corner of the internet. I did not anticipate how my words would connect and those connections would become meaningful.

Sharing is Caring

If Your Dream Only Includes You, It’s Too Small — Ava DuVernay

I knew the natural hair community was an uplifting one, but still the warmth and motivation I received surprised me. I have learned a lot in this past year of blogging–from how to manage a blog schedule (ya girl was posting manually for MONTHS. smh) to finding ways to connect, engage, and spread the love.

The pursuit of natural may be an individual journey but it is ultimately a shared experience. Year two, I want to amplify the voices of others as you all have amplified mine. Spotlights, guest posts, and reblogs. If you–yes, I’m talking to you–would like a reblog, leave a link below. If you’d like to write a guest post, drop me a line via the contact form.

A Pit Stop on the Pursuit

Being natural has come to encompass a lot more to me than just hair, and my pursuit has grown deeper and wider — Pursuit Of Natural

That was in response to a question on how I came up with the name for my blog, and it’s true. Pretty much every naturalista I’ve followed has gone through this evolution where self-expression flourishes as an outgrowth of being natural. Primarily, my pursuit of natural has led me to take my self-care more seriously, which I’d like to write about. It also made me seek out and learn from other black women who did or were trying to do the same. And I began to invest in parts of myself that have been neglected for years.

That’s where the hiatus comes in. I’ve taken up old passions and dusted off dormant skillsets. The blog will go on break next month as I focus on working on these other ventures, but you can keep up with what I’m up to on my twitter and Instagram (links in the sidebar.) So be sure to follow me there.

Thanks y’all! Don’t forget to share your blogs (yes, your blog!) in the comments. Introduce yourself and let us know what you write about. And reach out if you would like a reblog on The Pursuit, or to write a guest post.

If you’re a fan of The Pursuit, please like, subscribe, and share!

Liebster Award

liebster2

The fabulous OlenaRosanne nominated me. Y’all. She’s awesome and I’m humbled to receive this award from her. If you aren’t subscribed to her already, go do that and come back. I’ll wait. You can find her at olenarosanne.com. She blogs, vlogs, tweets, and ‘grams about natural hair & beauty, and she still finds time to show support for others.

Thank you, Queen!

The Rules:

  1.  Answer the questions you were asked.
  2.  Tag 11 people who have under 200 Twitter followers  *adding Facebook followers / Email subscribers.
  3.  Create 11 new questions.
  4. Recognize who tagged you.

OlenaRosanne’s Questions

Q1.  How did you come up with the name of your blog?  I brainstormed it out, really. I asked myself what my natural hair blog would be about and I said “life, levity, and…” the pursuit of nappiness was taken. Ha! So the Pursuit of Natural was born. Being natural has come to encompass a lot more to me than just hair, and my pursuit has grown deeper and wider, as I become the person I need to be to achieve the things I need to do.

Q2. What is your favorite color?  Red

Q3.  What advice would you give new bloggers? Don’t limit yourself. Stay open and flexible–this includes finding ways to take a break from the blogging grind. Be willing to learn from others and try new things. Most importantly, find ways to show support for others in your blogosphere.

Q4.  Do you have any children? Nope.

Q5.  What was your favorite subject in school?  Reading and writing

Q6.  Do you currently play or have you ever  played any instruments?  I play the piano.

Q7.  What are your hobbies outside of your blog?  Programming, composing music, drawing.

Q8.  Why did you decide to blog?  Introvert here, too! I thought blogging would be a good opportunity to push myself when it comes to engaging other people, expressing myself, being disciplined about my interests, and sharing my ideas. It also helped break some of the negative cycles of my depression.

Q9.  What is your drink of choice?  Girl, choice would be a luxury the way my diet is set up! When it’s not water, it’s mostly green tea infused with some fruit for extra flavor, and the occasional glass of orange juice.

Q10.  What fruit flavor do you gravitate towards when choosing something to eat or drink?  Gotta be apple–pies, jam, candy, apple dapple, apple crisp, apple apples. Alas, I can’t have most of those anymore.

Q11.  What nationality do you identify as?  African-American

My Questions

  1. Does your blog have a message, and if so what is it?
  2. If you could describe your relationship to your blog in one word, what would it be?
  3. Can you share your other social media handles and how you feel about doing self-promotion, if you do any, in these other places?
  4. What is your favorite way to de-stress and relax?
  5. What are some of your sources of creative inspiration?
  6. Big or small, can you share one thing you’ve accomplished recently that you are proud of?
  7. If you could have an all expenses paid vacation anywhere, where would you go?
  8. Are you multilingual, and if not what language would you like to speak?
  9. What’s something you used to do for fun and don’t anymore, but would like to get back to ?
  10. What’s your favorite time of the year?
  11. And because this is an important question OlenaRosanne asked, I’ll pass it on: What advice would you give new bloggers?

Thank You

thanks50

Recently, WordPress notified me that I had reached 50 followers on this blog, alone. It’s a modest milestone, but a milestone that I felt should be celebrated nonetheless. Because that number represents months of personal growth and some really wonderful people in this corner of the blogosphere.

So, thank you to everyone who took the time to read, like, comment, share, and follow. A special thanks to all the supportive women who have made this community so welcoming. And a very special thanks to the women featured in the image above, who have engaged, encouraged, and inspired me in their own ways to keep going.

Please check out their blogs and other platforms, where you’ll find great content on self-love, inspiration, health, beauty and, of course, natural hair!

I’ve gifted these five ladies a full color background and a full black and white illustrated portrait as a show of my appreciation. And I’m definitely going to do something like this again in future, because the Pursuit of Natural has been hard work and a learning experience, but ultimately a blessing.

Thanks for rockin with me. If you liked this post, please take a second to “like” this post! Share with your friends, and follow me on my other platforms. Links in the sidebar.

Natural Hair Tag

20170604_073329289

I’ve been tagged! *runs around in circles freaking out* Shout out to Yeka over at MyYeka for creating the tag and for nominating me. Thank you, lady! Y’all check out her site.

The Rules:

It goes for all hair types… From straight to the coiliest, kinkiest strands.

  • Put the logo/image on your blog.
  •  List the rules.
  • Thank the person who nominated you and link their blog.
  •  Mention the creator of the Hair Tag and link their blog.
  •  Answer the Hair Tag Questions plus the additional question asked by your nominee
  •  You have to nominate 5-10 people.
  •  Notify your nominees by commenting on their blog.
  •  Ask your nominees 2 questions of your choice.
  • Post your picture on Instagram and Tag @De_naturelle for a repost or use the hash tag #denaturelle .
  • Reblog their Response (optional)

The Questions:

1. Tell us a little about you? What do you do with your spare time? I blog, I draw, I create music, I code, I read, I write, I am quite apparently an indoors person.
2. Are you a natural? How do you feel about your hair? I’m natural and I love it.

3.  How long have you been natural? I’ve been natural nearly five years

4.  Why did you go natural? My relaxed hair was a broken, unwearable mess

5.  Was anyone against your decision? If yes, how did you surpass it? No one objected, but when I went natural I had to ignore the negative remarks and keep in mind all the reasons I chose to wear my hair natural. Eventually, the negativity faded away as I wore my hair proudly and beautifully.

6. What’s your hair type and How do you manage your it? 4c/4b. I have distinct patches, not all mixed together, so it was one of the first challenges I had to learn to manage. I have a post all about styling mixed textures here.

7. How do you keep your hair moisturized and healthy? Wash regularly, remoisturize midweek, trim and snip knots, keep it protected.

leaveinimage

8. What are your goto natural hair products? Are you a DIY fan? Do you have hair goals? I’m not a DIY fan. I’ve used the same products since the beginning. My leave-in. My oil. My shampoo and conditioner. My hair is already longer than I can remember it ever being, so my goals are to just keep it healthy and keep it growing. I stopped doing length checks a year or so ago.

9.  How do you style your hair? Currently doing cornrows and missing my fro

10. What’s your favorite protective hairstyle to do? Has to be the halo/crown twist as it is easy to do and hard to not look good in it.

11. Do you use heat on your hair?, how do you prevent heat damage? Not anymore. To prevent heat damage, I used a low setting and a heat protectant spray

12 Do you hairxperiment?, How crazy can you go with your hair? Nope. I don’t have time to play around with my hair, and I get easily frustrated when styles don’t turn out right (that’s time and energy I can’t get back,) but I do like to try different braiding patterns with my cornrows, and I like to test different techniques for stretching and setting my hair.

12. Have you faced any challenge as a natural? Fairy knots. Breakage. Disappearing edges. The usual.

13. How do you manage bad hair days? I plan so I won’t have them. That means long term protective styles or transitional styles. Things don’t always go according to plan, but I can’t remember the last truly bad hair day. Even when I need to throw on a beanie, it’s usually because I haven’t completed my styling rather than it looking bad.

14.  Can you share with us your thoughts on natural hair and relaxed hair? Your hair is yours, and not anyone else’s. Wear it however you want but wear it first and foremost for you. If you educate yourself on how to care for your hair properly, you can look good natural or relaxed.

15. What hair rules have you stuck to as a natural? Finger detangling instead of using combs.

16. Can you share with us some pics of you counting your Hair strands? Be creative😋 I don’t think I’ve ever taken pics of me counting my hair strands. 😉 But I really do look like my logo!

18 . What do you have to say to the new, upcoming and already naturals? We’re all here to learn and to help. Watch, read, and reach out to other naturals online. Add your story and experiences to the community. Thanks if you already do. Check out my blog and my Dear Newly Natural Me series–and thanks if you already do!

Nominees & My Questions:

  1. Adeyoola at Doing it Natural
  2. Lee at Woeful to Frofull
  3. NappyHeadedJojoba

What hairstyle took you the most attempts to get right?  If you could have someone else do one step in your hair care regimen for you, which step would that be?

Thanks for reading! If you enjoyed this post as much as I did, please take a second to give it a “like”. Share, subscribe, and follow me on my other platforms via the links in the sidebar.

Akinyi’s Questions:

  1. What are you scared of ? Why? I’m afraid of heights. It’s a common fear, and as everyone knows, it’s not the height you’re afraid of. It’s the fall from it.
  2. What do you like about yourself? That I still love to learn. Life is more interesting when you are open to discovering new things every day.
  3. Do you have a favorite blogger and who is it? I honestly don’t have a favorite. • Ask your nominees 5 questions of your choice; with one weird or funny question.

So, I’ve been nominated by Yeka over at myyeka.wordpress.com. Thanks, girl! This put a smile on my face today.

Three Things About Me:

  1. I hate bananas–the cold mushy texture, the afterthought of a flavor. I rebuke it. Give me fried plantain any day! I can’t remember ever liking bananas, but I do remember many a standoff as a child refusing to eat my “fruits”.
  2. I’m an aspiring music producer. I’ve had an on-again off-again love affair with the piano since preschool. Today, I’m pursuing a career in music production.
  3. “I’m currently learning Spanish”…has been a perennial saying of mine for the past two years.

Yeka’s Questions:

1. Would you cut your hair for $10m?

Girl, with 10 million dollars I would cut my fro and convert to product junkism. Hand pressed coconut pink hibiscus mermaid tears deep conditioner? I’ll take a dozen!

2.  What is your worst scenario of a typical bad day?

Being too depressed to eat, take care of myself, or interact with anyone.

3.  What is your biggest dream in life?

My biggest dream is to work hard enough to be successful enough to help my family ease their burdens.

4. How mischievous were you in your childhood days?

Ha! Not very. I tried it, got caught in a lie (I was never a good liar), and got my butt whooped. But those cookies were so addictive, I just had to eat the whole box.

5. Who in this world would you trade places with just for a day?

For one day? President of the United States sounds good, but then, of course, you are *trading* places.  So, no one. I don’t want anyone wreaking havoc for 24 hours in my life.

6. What’s the craziest thing you have ever done for love?

I’ve never done anything crazy for love. Draw your own conclusions.

My Questions:

  1. What is your favorite way to treat yourself?
  2. Disregarding the laws of physics, what’s an invention you could use to make your life easier?
  3. Whom in your life do you lean on most, when you are going through hard times?
  4. When was the last time you got a compliment that brightened your day?
  5. Do you remember your life before smartphones; how has technology impacted you (for better or worse?)

The Nominees!

  1. HeyMissJackson
  2. Full of Sol
  3. HealthyNappyNerdyMommy
  4. The Curly Frugalista
  5. D’apres Tania
  6. Idle Head
  7. Beinpickii
  8. Naturallynn
  9. Rhythm In Life
